Graduation Bookshelf

With graduation season upon us, many are looking for unique gifts to make our graduates feel LOVED!  Now that my kids are high school and college-age, I often view children’s books through an entirely new lens, so when I read through each of these books my thoughts drifted to what great graduation gifts these could make.  These newer books are great alternatives to the ever-so-popular Oh, the Places You’ll Go, and each carries a special message for kids of all ages.  So whether you are a friend, relative, teacher, or parent there’s something for you!

I am also a personal fan of book quotes!  To share a little book joy, I have created a companion book quote printable for each of the books on this list.  These are available as free downloads and are in a PNG picture format.  Unlike a JPG file, this means you will be able to resize them to fit in any picture frame or to make the background transparent to overlay them on top of any personal designs or to print on colored paper. Make sure you change the setting on your printer to the best or highest quality before printing. Your download link will be available for 48 hours after you enter your name and email address. Plus, you will become part of our Daily Joy Insiders, which means you will be the first to know about posts and giveaways!

Amor (Spanish edition)or Love (English edition) by Matt de la Peña and illustrated by Loren Long

You can easily guess the theme of this book by the title! Love is beautifully featured as what is found in family interactions, in small gestures, in everyday life and in the world around us.  The inclusion of love in the face of uncertainty also feels very timely.  The last two pages depict how love is your family gathering around you under umbrellas in the rain to send you off into the world, so this is perfect for a graduate who will be leaving home and could be a great gift from any teacher, friend, or family member.

I knew you could do it

I Knew You Could Do It by Nancy Tillman

I have been a fan of Nancy Tillman’s books for years and have gifted her books to my kids in the past. If you are not familiar with her books, they bring messages of hope and love and promote positive self-esteem.  This book is no exception and celebrates past, as well as future accomplishments!  This book could be given from anyone standing in support of a graduate!

Just in case you want to fly

Just in Case You Want to Fly by Julie Fogliano and Christian Robinson

As caregivers, we are used to meeting our kids needs.  Written in poetic form, “just in case you want to fly here’s some win and here’s the sky” … from emotional needs such as “here’s a tissue” to practical needs “here’s an umbrella”, this book showcases how you will be there for your child no matter what.  Even though it depicts young children and even a small child being tucked into bed on the last page, this book shares the message of spreading your wings and flying with the knowledge that I’m right here ready to support you no matter what. Gifting of this book would most likely come from a parent, grandparent, or close family member.

Tomorrow Is Waiting

Tomorrow is Waiting by Kiley Frank and illustrated by Aaron Meshon

I have always been someone who looks to the future, excitedly anticipating the next adventure.  Although this book appears to be written from a parent to a child, inviting the reader to “bravely explore the endless possibilities of tomorrow” the theme includes spreading your wings as you face mountains and shadows and even obstacles in your adventure.  Based on the illustrations, this book would be a great gift from a parent, grandparent, or close family member.

All reviews are completely my own and I only recommend books I truly believe are worthy of sharing with others. (Believe me, I read many books I do not recommend, which means you won’t see me writing about them!)
